We are proud to share that our own Canon Vicar, The Rev. Canon Liz Kronenberg, has been featured in the Houston Chronicle as part of a Women’s History Month spotlight on women in religious leadership across Houston.

Staff writer Haajrah Gilani’s piece, “How these Houston women overcame roadblocks to religious leadership: ‘No idea it was a possibility,'” profiles several trailblazing women of faith in our city — and Canon Vicar Liz’s voice and witness shine brightly among them.

A Journey Shaped by Faith and Courage

Like many of the women featured in the article, Canon Liz’s path to ministry was not without obstacles. Growing up, she believed that church leadership was beyond her reach. Yet her faith drew her forward, and today she serves as Canon Vicar of Christ Church Cathedral, the Episcopal cathedral for the Diocese of Texas.

Her journey is a testament to what becomes possible when a community dares to live out the fullness of the Gospel.

Following the Way of Jesus

For Canon Liz, ministry is rooted in the compassion Jesus showed to those living on the margins of society. In the Chronicle interview, she draws a direct line between the example of Christ and the Church’s call to welcome and celebrate all people — including the LGBTQ+ community and immigrants.

“If we are to follow the way of Jesus, we are to not only include them, but celebrate them and fold them into the community that God has created,” she said. “Who are we to separate that? Who are we to destroy that?”

Honest About the Work Still Ahead

Canon Liz also speaks with characteristic honesty about the challenges that remain, even in progressive faith communities. She recalls being in rooms where male priests outnumbered her, sometimes spoke over her, or didn’t extend her the same consideration as her peers.

“It’s easy to think, ‘Oh, women and equality, that’s a thing of the past. We’re already there,'” she said. “But that’s not true.”

Her willingness to name that reality — with grace and without bitterness — is part of what makes her such a powerful voice in our cathedral and in our city.

We Give Thanks

Christ Church Cathedral is grateful for Canon Liz’s leadership, her pastoral heart, and her prophetic witness. We celebrate her not just during Women’s History Month, but every Sunday when she leads us to the table, calls us to justice, and reminds us of the radical, boundary-breaking love of God.
