Joseph Causby serves as Director of Music and Organist at Christ Church Cathedral, where he leads the Cathedral’s vibrant music ministry and oversees its rich Anglican choral tradition. An accomplished organist, choirmaster, and scholar, Joe is passionate about music as a pastoral ministry that proclaims the Gospel, nurtures spiritual growth, and enriches congregational life.
Before joining Christ Church Cathedral in 2026, Joe served for eight years as Director of Music at the Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Earlier in his career, he held the same position at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in San Antonio and began his ministry in the Episcopal Church at Trinity Episcopal Church in Houston, making his return to the city a meaningful homecoming.
A native of North Carolina, Joe earned graduate degrees from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music before completing a doctorate in Musicology at the University of Durham in England. During his time there, he became the first American to serve as Organ Scholar at Durham Cathedral.
Joe has been a leader in the wider Anglican music community throughout his career. He is a past President of the Royal School of Church Music in America, an organization dedicated to training church musicians and strengthening sacred music in the Anglican tradition. In recognition of his distinguished service, he was named a Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 2023.
Known for his excellence as both a musician and teacher, Joe is committed to fostering inspiring worship, developing singers and instrumentalists of all ages, and building a music ministry that welcomes the broader community into the beauty of sacred music.
Joe and his husband, Bob Brewer, are delighted to call Houston home once again.
