Wednesdays in Mississippi: Proper Ladies Working for Radical Change, Freedom Summer 1964

Join us for a four-week online discussion exploring an extraordinary and often overlooked chapter of the Civil Rights Movement: Wednesdays in Mississippi, the only woman-devised and woman-led program of the movement.

During Freedom Summer 1964, teams of middle-aged, middle-class women from the North traveled to Jackson, Mississippi, seeking to bridge divides among Northern women and Southern white and African-American women. They visited communities surrounding Jackson, observed Freedom Summer projects, and gathered with local women to listen, learn, and begin conversations across racial, regional, and cultural lines.

Over four Sunday evenings in October, we’ll use Debbie Z. Harwell’s Wednesdays in Mississippi: Proper Ladies Working for Radical Change, Freedom Summer 1964 as a starting point for conversation. Each week will explore a different theme from this history and consider how it continues to resonate today:

  • October 4 — Fear
  • October 11 — Religion
  • October 18 — Bridging Communication Gaps
  • October 25 — Propaganda and Lies

Reading the book will enrich the conversation but is not required to participate. A syllabus will be provided.

Come ready to learn from this remarkable history and to consider what the experiences of these women can teach us about faith, communication, division, and the work of building relationships today.

No registration is required.
