To the People of Christ Church Cathedral,
It is with a bittersweet mix of gratitude, affection, and admiration that I announce the retirement of our beloved Canon
for Music, Bob Simpson, effective at the end of this July.
For thirty-two years, Bob has been the heartbeat of the musical life of this Cathedral. Under his visionary leadership,
the music ministry of Christ Church Cathedral has flourished as a beacon of beauty in the heart of downtown
Houston. Bob’s ministry has been a testament to the power of sacred music to open the human heart to the divine.
Bob’s impact, however, extends far beyond our Cathedral walls. As a Grammy-winning conductor and a pillar of the
Houston arts community, he has modeled how a Cathedral can serve as a cultural wellspring for an entire city. His
commitment to the Anglican choral tradition, paired with his heart for mentorship and his joy in fellowship, has left an
indelible mark on generations of choir members, parishioners, and neighbors alike.
Reflecting on his tenure, Bob has shared that, “Little did I know in 1993, as I drove my tiny white Miata from Atlanta
to Houston to become Organist-Choirmaster at Christ Church Cathedral, that I was about to be embraced by a
community of love and faith that would bless my life for the next 32 years. What a privilege it has been to serve this
extraordinary parish in the company of cherished colleagues and friends. Marianna and I leave with hearts filled with
gratitude.”
Bob’s last Sunday leading worship at the Cathedral will be on July 12th. He will then conclude his extraordinary ministry
on pilgrimage with the Cathedral Choir that will begin in London, England on July 17th and conclude at the American
Cathedral in Paris on Sunday, July 26th.
The Path Forward
The Music Ministry of Christ Church Cathedral has a tremendous legacy spanning many decades. During Bob’s tenure
he has built upon this rich legacy. Identifying a worthy successor to Bob will be a humbling and exciting task. I have
formed a Search Committee to assist me in that effort composed of parishioners Bill McKenzie (Cathedral Choir
member and Search Committee Chair), Gary Smith (Cathedral Choir member and past organist), Flo Ray (Parish Choir
member). The Committee will also benefit from the counsel of Prof. Ken Cowan, Associate Professor and head of the
organ program at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music.
While Bob’s shoes are impossible to fill, he leaves us with a program that is vibrant, healthy, and poised for a bold
future. Because of his ministry, we expect that this search will attract highly talented ministers of music from around
the country.
A Season of Celebration
Over the coming months, we will have many opportunities to honor Bob and his wife, Marianna, for their devotion to
this community. We will celebrate the completion of Bob’s ministry with the vigor it deserves, culminating in a special
Whitsuntide concert and Evensong prior to the choir’s departure on pilgrimage.
Bob, we thank you for the thousands of hours of inspiring worship, the meticulous rehearsals you led, and the spiritual
depth you brought to every note. You have truly taught us how to “sing to the Lord a new song.”

A la comunidad de La Iglesia Catedral de Cristo:
Con una agridulce mezcla de gratitud, afecto y admiración, anuncio el retiro de nuestro querido Canónigo de Música, Bob Simpson, efectivo a fines de este mes de julio.
Durante treinta y dos años, Bob ha sido el corazón de la vida musical de esta Catedral. Bajo su liderazgo visionario, el ministerio de música de La Iglesia Catedral de Cristo ha florecido como un faro de belleza en el corazón del centro de Houston. El ministerio de Bob ha sido un testimonio del poder de la música sacra para abrir el corazón humano a lo divino.
Sin embargo, el impacto de Bob se extiende mucho más allá de los muros de nuestra Catedral. Como director ganador de un premio Grammy y pilar de la comunidad artística de Houston, ha mostrado cómo una Catedral puede servir como un manantial cultural para toda una ciudad. Su compromiso con la tradición coral anglicana, unido a su vocación de mentoría y a su alegría en la comunión, ha dejado una huella imborrable en generaciones de integrantes del coro, feligreses y vecinos por igual.
Al reflexionar sobre su trayectoria, Bob ha compartido: “Poco sabía yo en 1993, cuando conduje mi pequeño Miata blanco desde Atlanta hasta Houston para convertirme en Organista y Maestro de Coro de La Iglesia Catedral de Cristo, que estaba a punto de ser recibido por una comunidad de amor y fe que bendeciría mi vida durante los siguientes 32 años. Ha sido un privilegio servir a esta parroquia extraordinaria en compañía de colegas y amigos entrañables. Marianna y yo nos vamos con el corazón lleno de gratitud.”
El último domingo de Bob dirigiendo el culto en la Catedral será el 12 de julio. Luego concluirá su extraordinario ministerio con una peregrinación junto al Coro de la Catedral, que comenzará en Londres, Inglaterra, el 17 de julio, y finalizará en la Catedral Americana de París el domingo 26 de julio.
El camino a seguir
El Ministerio de Música de La Iglesia Catedral de Cristo posee un legado extraordinario que se extiende a lo largo de muchas décadas. Durante la gestión de Bob, ese rico legado se ha visto fortalecido. Identificar a un sucesor digno de Bob será una tarea tan humilde como estimulante. He conformado un Comité de Búsqueda para que me asista en este proceso, integrado por los feligreses Bill McKenzie (miembro del Coro de la Catedral y presidente del Comité de Búsqueda), Gary Smith (miembro del Coro de la Catedral y ex organista) y Flo Ray (miembro del Coro Parroquial). El comité también contará con el asesoramiento del Prof. Ken Cowan, profesor asociado y director del programa de órgano de la Shepherd School of Music de la Universidad Rice.
Aunque los zapatos de Bob son imposibles de llenar, nos deja un programa vibrante, saludable y preparado para un futuro audaz. Gracias a su ministerio, esperamos que esta búsqueda atraiga a ministros de música de gran talento de todo el país.
Una temporada de celebración
En los próximos meses, tendremos muchas oportunidades para honrar a Bob y a su esposa, Marianna, por su dedicación a esta comunidad. Celebraremos la culminación del ministerio de Bob con el entusiasmo que merece, culminando en un concierto especial de Pentecostés y un Evensong, previo a la partida del coro en peregrinación.
Bob, te agradecemos las miles de horas de culto inspirador, los ensayos meticulosos que has conducido y la profundidad espiritual que has aportado a cada nota. Verdaderamente nos has enseñado a “cantar al Señor un cántico nuevo”.
