A Sanctuary in the Heart of Houston Since 1839

Before Houston was a city, Christ Church was a community. Founded in 1839 when Texas was a republic, we are the city’s oldest congregation and the only one still worshiping on its original downtown site. Our story is woven into the very fabric of Houston, but our mission remains timeless: to proclaim the love of Jesus Christ through word and deed.

The Mother Church of the Diocese

In 1949, Christ Church was designated the Cathedral for the Episcopal Diocese of Texas. As the “seat” of our Bishop and the Mother Church of the region, we serve as a spiritual home base for nearly 175 congregations across the southeastern quartile of Texas. We are a parish for the city and a cathedral for the state.

As a member of the worldwide Anglican Communion, we embrace the via media—the middle way. We blend the beauty of ancient Catholic tradition with the forward-thinking spirit of the Protestant Reformation.

The Episcopal Way: Walking the “Middle Path”

As a member of the worldwide Anglican Communion, we embrace the via media—the middle way. We blend the beauty of ancient Catholic tradition with the forward-thinking spirit of the Protestant Reformation.

Our faith is guided by a “three-legged stool”:

  • Scripture: The foundational story of God’s love.
  • Tradition: The wisdom of those who walked the path before us.
  • Reason: The God-given ability to think, question, and grow.

Our Covenant in Action

Following Jesus isn’t just about what we believe; it’s about how we live. We strive daily to live out our Baptismal Covenant: seeking Christ in all persons, loving our neighbors as ourselves, and respecting the dignity of every human being.
